Taking Responsibility

Any journey that you take in life that is causing you and me to change starts with you and me taking responsibility for the steps that have brought us to this stage in life. I want to encourage you to read Andy Andrews book or listen to the audio book, “The Traveler’s Gift.”

Andy Andrews is one of the most engaging authors and speakers that I have come to admire. His book “The Traveler’s Gift” is interesting and the story really comes alive.

The seven decisions that determine personal success are laid out so that the character, David Ponder, learns what the decisions are and we are taught how to apply them to our lives. I followed this book for a year and it really helped me in my journey to physical and financial fitness and I want to share it with you.

There are many points to this first decision to determine your personal success, so I think I’m going to work on this one with you for a few weeks. Here is the breakdown, and I want to see what resonates with you.

The buck stops here

It’s that easy. We need to accept responsibility for our past decisions that brought us to this point. Let’s face it, we are responsible for our success.

I am where I am today – mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally, and financially, because of how I think. My thinking is going to be constructive not destructive.

How do you start?

By seeking the associations of those who are working and striving to bring about positive changes in the world. If you are running with the chickens and you want to soar with eagles, go find the eagles. If you want to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle, find a people who are of the same mind. You can’t afford to hang around with people who are down in the dumps all the time.

Do not seek comfort by associating with those who have decided to be comfortable. This says to me that you make the decision to not be mediocre or average. You want to be above average. Start filling your mind with the wisdom of others that have accomplished their goals and are always setting new ones. Podcasts and audio books are great for this. Whatever you are interested in, there is someone out there that shares the same interest and can get you fired up about it.

These are some examples of who I listen too:
Dave Ramsey
Leslie Sansone
John Lee Dumas
Michael Hyatt
Seth Godin
Chris LoCurto
Andy Andrews
Dan Miller

I find that if I am filling my mind with the positive messages and teachings that people like these have to share, there isn’t time for me to dwell on the past. I begin to think and change what will be come of me and my future.

I am going to continue looking at this first step in the seven steps to determining personal success by Andy Andrews. I want you to think about the “stinking thinking” that is holding you back. Go to your local library and see what books they have on the shelves that are written by authors that are where you want to be. Choose your topic and then find the podcast that will get you fired up.

I love this Bible verse sums up this topic:

Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. – New Living Translation
